Sportsmanship Awards
_Too many times the barometer of ones success as
an athlete, a coach or a team is the won - lost record at the end of
the season.
We have all heard the maxim - "It is not whether you win or lose, but how you play the game." Yet, how many of us truly embrace
those words, and practice good sportsmanship on and off the playing field?
There are many awards for the championship team, most valuable player, coach of the year, and others. These awards are
appropriate and the respective recipients should be proud of their accomplishments. Lacrosse is a game with a rich tradition of
spirited yet fair play. With this in mind, commencing in 2007, the Michigan Lacrosse Official's Association ("MichLOA") deemed it
appropriate to recognize those boy's lacrosse teams which represent sportsmanship of the highest level.
The members of MichLOA are not just officials, but true fans of lacrosse. We recognize the unique opportunity presented by
participation in a team sport and the pressure to succeed. However, the pursuit of excellence and desire to win should not displace
the standards of fairness and character. These traits and goals of an individual or team are not mutually exclusive. Rather they form
the foundation for success on the playing field and beyond.
It has been our pleasure and honor to present the MichLOA Sportsmanship Award to the following programs and all of those
associated with these lacrosse teams should be commended for their efforts.
